The Lucky 31 Bet Explained
As we mentioned, a Lucky 31 is a multiple system bet. It is not a straight line multi which means that we do not need all of our picks to win in order for a return to come back to us.
As for the formula, the clue is in the title, and there are 31 bets involved in a Lucky 31. Five selections are needed to make up the equation, and the full breakdown works as follows:
- 5 Singles
- 10 Doubles
- 10 Trebles
- 5 Four-Folds
- 1 Five-Fold Accumulator
Unlike other systems, when we work out a Lucky 31 bet, we can see that only one single winner is enough to guarantee a return. However, it's unlikely that we would see an overall profit unless you’d taken exceptional odds on that pick - 32/1 or higher.
Your unit stake will be multiplied by x31, and this point needs to be kept in mind when we calculate a Lucky 31 bet. So, if we want a unit stake of £1.00, our total outlay will be £31.00. We’ll underline that point a little later when we show our Lucky 31 bet example.
As for finding a bet, you can use this system on any sport. It’s common in horse racing markets, and our selection will cover the Euro 2020 competition. So, when anyone asks: “What is a Lucky 31 bet in football” there will be a direct example on this site.
As for researching a Lucky 31 bet, there’s no real mystery in this instance. It’s all about doing the regular research that you would put in for any sports picks. Study the form book, look at any head-to-head results that are available, and consider any other trends such as performances on a certain ground.
Make your picks and follow the process, which we will underline in the next section.
A Real-Life Lucky 31 Bet Example
We’re now going to have a Lucky 31 bet explained using actual matches from the 2020 European Championships. We’re looking at the second round of group games in this tournament, and we’re going to be making the following selections:
- England to beat Scotland
- Wales to beat Turkey
- Germany to beat Portugal
- The Netherlands to beat Austria
- Croatia to beat the Czech Republic
That list contains a mix of favourites and outsiders. You may not agree with it, but it’s all about opinions, and we’re just showing an example. Click on the chosen winners, and your online bet slip will look something like this.
As you can see, it has defaulted in this case to five single bets, and it’s made a suggested stake. At the top right-hand corner of the slip, there is a section marked “systems”, so we click on this. Now we have the option to place a Lucky 31 bet, as shown here.
We’ve adjusted the unit stake to £1.00, so there is a total outlay of £31.00. In terms of a bet calculator Lucky 31 figures, in this case, show that there would be a return of £250.96 if all of those selections were to win.
Note that the bet slip will differ slightly depending on which football betting sites you are using, but the process is likely to be similar in all cases. That’s the mechanics, but is Lucky 31 the right system for you?

Should I Use This System as Part of My Strategy?
If you’re progressing from single bets and are looking for a system, the Lucky 31 bet could be a good one to try. To help your thought process, we’ll look more closely at that Lucky 31 bet example from the previous section.
The selection that carried the longest odds was Wales to beat Turkey, which was available at 9/4. If that was the only pick that won, our return would be just £3.25. That equates to a loss of £27.75, which is a poor result, but we would be disappointed if only one bet delivered.
So, let’s say that Wales and Germany were the only two winners from that Lucky 31 bet. We now have a double at 9/4 + 13/10 with a £1.00 stake which returns £7.48.
Add in England to beat Scotland at 4/13, and the three returns come to £20.13.
So, we now know that the average Lucky 31 needs four of its five selections to win in order for a profit to be returned. Keep that in mind when you’re looking to stake.
Conclusion
If you are completely new to system bets, then we would suggest starting with a Trixie who has just three selections and far less exposure. A Lucky 31 can, however, be a good next step for any newcomers.
Four wins from five to return a profit isn’t a bad equation, and any losses can be mitigated by just a single winner. To test it out and see if it’s for you, try a Lucky 31 on paper or look to kick things off for real with smaller stakes.
